July 4th in Staten Island
Project style
Documentary pictures
Date
July 2017
Place
New York City
New York is Manhattan, skyscrapers, money, opulence, Macy's, its Thanksgiving parade and its July 4th fireworks. Most people wrongly think that a parade is organized in the heart of Manhattan for the national holiday. During my research I found the only parade organized in "the Big Apple" and this, since 1911 without interruption, which makes it the oldest in the United States. It is located in one of the boroughs that the inhabitants themselves call "the forgotten boroughs": Staten Island. Tourists know this island well thanks to its free ferry that allows you to get close to the Statue of Liberty... Unfortunately, most of them do not leave the ferry terminal, they immediately leave for Manhattan with the next boat. I then headed to Travis, this neighborhood south of Staten Island. From Manhattan, 20 minutes by boat, 30 by bus and we are immersed in a "New York rurality" that few know. Patriotism is at its peak, houses are decorated with national colors, veterans are in place. New York Mayor Bill De Blasio (Democrat) will make the trip and will not fail to be insulted by pro-Trump residents or those dissatisfied with his policy participating in the forgetting of certain New York neighborhoods.
