July 4th
Celebrating America, far from the skyscrapers of Manhattan.
New York is often Manhattan, its skyscrapers, its opulence, its Thanksgiving Day parade and its Fourth of July fireworks.
However, the only real parade organized in New York for the national holiday has been taking place since 1911 in Staten Island, one of the forgotten boroughs .
There in Travis, twenty minutes by ferry and thirty by bus from Manhattan, I discovered another America: rural, patriotic, proud.
The decorated houses, the veterans, Mayor Bill de Blasio booed by a divided crowd: everything seemed at once simple, sincere and contrasting.
An immersion into a 4th of July that few New Yorkers truly know.
